Incubator® finishes its first project for Mission Australia ft. singer/writer Emma Louise

In 2012, as part of its efforts under Incubator to foster creative projects that generate workplace training opportunities for emerging professionals in the creative industries, PIIP instigated a collaboration between singer/songwriter Emma Louise and Mission Australia.

The collaboration resulted in the recording of a new version of the national anthem for use in an integrated fundraising campaign. This campaign ran in the lead up to and during 2012 Australia Day. It reminded people that disparity in Australia still exists and asked that if they wanted to make Australia fair for all then they should donate to Mission Australia.

The campaign raised the largest amount of money of any previous fundraising effort.

The linchpin to the campaign was Emma Louise' recording of the national anthem, Advance Australia Fair. The song was recorded in Cairns with Mark Myers and mastered in Sydney by Greg Crittenden. It was used in 30 and 60 sec TVCs, a 90 sec viral video and various radio spots. Creative Concept & Development was produced by Change The Conversation.

The song was also independently released as a single by Rick Chazan of Ground Control, where it was subsequently picked up by various indie radio stations like Triple J, 2SER and FBI Radio. The added radio air-time gave Mission Australia invaluable free publicity.

Enormous thanks go out to Ed St John who helped put this together.

Please enjoy the finished work below.

Buds Clinic® launches with Mickl Sayers and Daniel Vella

On Saturday 23rd October 2010, PIIP ran its inaugural Buds Clinic music mentorship masterclass with drummer Mickl Sayers from the Screaming Jets and 16-year old talent Daniel Vella. Daniel submitted an explosive drum solo to win the opportunity.

Mickl Sayers spent the whole day helping this young aspiring drummer with his technique and his self confidence, which is a big must if you want to be successful in the music industry. Mickl showed endless patience and kindness in giving up his day to help inspire and provide crucial insight, knowledge and technique to Daniel.

A big thank you to NEON REHEARSAL STUDIO and the owner, Craig, who provided the space for Buds Clinic and made it all possible. Craig runs one of the largest and most unique recording studio's on the East Coast. The rates are very good and this place has an amazing set up with 6 rehearsal rooms and a recording studio. The studio is run by musicians for musicians. They want to see you get the results you deserve. This is a great place to jam with your band or hold functions with a rocking professional fit out. This is a great place for networking and meeting like minded people. If you are thinking about recording in Brisbane you need to check this place out!

A Special thanks to ACCESS DRUMMING and Duncan who provided a Sleishmann kit for Daniel as well as all transport and set up. Cameron gave up his time to come and provide some tips of his own to Daniel. Like Mickl, Cameron is also a Sleishmann endorsed drummer who plays with Roller Ball. He has travelled the world with his craft and regularly teaches kids of all ages. Cameron has an obvious passion for his trade.

Special thanks also to the guys at TALL POPPIES PRODUCTION for the AV tech knowledge equipment use.

Last, but not least, we would like to thank the amazing Mr Mickl Sayers. Mickl, thank you.

You can learn more about Mickl here.

if you would like to know more about Mickl Sayers or Buds Clinic check out the January 2010 issue of Drumscene Magazine who supported us! Thank you also to Street Press Australia who also supported the scheme, along with many music projects throughout Australia. The people at Street Press Australia go above and beyond to bring you the best entertainment news.

A special debt of gratitude is owed to the Event Producer of Buds Clinic, Marguerite Boman, whose efforts and contribution went beyond the call of dutiful exhaustion. None of this would have been possible without her tenacity, passion and professionalism. Besides coordinating everything in Brisbane, from Sydney, she then flew to Brisbane to make sure everything ran smoothly. Her tireless work has made this first Buds Clinic a reality.

PIIP & The Filmmakers Factory join forces to launch Incubator

PIIP is excited to announce a project partnership with Marc Windon. Marc is the founder of a new start-up called The Filmmakers Factory. Under advise and direction from Marc, PIIP will produce a film industry event in September 2010 called Film Incubator, as part of Incubator. Film Incubator will run parallel with the Music Incubator and work to promote new opportunities between the film and music industries.

Marc has formed The Filmmakers Factory to help create a self sufficient film industry. He says of his venture, "it began as a Facebook group in early April 2010 and within a few weeks 2,000 members joined. Then when we released the official dot com website in late May we attracted over 10,000 visits in 6 weeks."

The website is a portal to many services offered by The Filmmakers Factory, each designed to help filmmakers either finance films or find employment. In the coming weeks, The Filmmakers Factory will also have IMDb-cross-Facebook style user profiles for professional filmmakers, services for freelance technicians, investment services for local and international investors, co-production facilities for feature films, distribution and marketing solutions and many other supports Marc believes the film industry needs.

Marc knows what he's talking about. He's a 3rd generation cinematographer and has shot 9 feature films in Australia and Hollywood. Amongst his achievements, he's worked with director/actor Dolph Lundgren on projects including Command Performance, Icarus and Skin Trade (currently in development). Marc has won numerous awards for his brilliant cinematography including Tropfest and the Australian Cinematographers Society.

PIIP bands with muso2muso

Claude Drulik, founder of PIIP, announced today a partnership with muso2muso which runs the www.muso2muso.com portal.

muso2muso is a service designed to help musicians find new band members. Founded by Rich Dale, a devoted guitar player, Rich came up with the idea after finding it hard to find a new band member. Rich says, "this whole thing started because I was finding it difficult to find other musicians to jam with. When my mate and I were trying to form a band we found it near impossible to find a bass player. This inspired me to create this website allowing musicians to put up their profiles, add their music, videos and photos so that they can network with others." Rich is continuously working to bring new solutions to musicians through muso2muso.

muso2muso has already launched its first major offline solution. After organising a free muso2muso night with support of his local pub, Billy Hyde Music & Thrifty for musicians of all genres to network, jam and hopefully find new band members, Rich realised there was a need to run the night again. The jam night subsequently evolved to become "Jam'n'Link", a regular jam and networking event that provides members of muso2muso the chance to meet other musicians, jam, form a band, perform live and catch emerging talent and acts.

"Jam'n'Link is proving a huge success for local musicians since starting", says Rich. "Every time it just seems to get bigger and bigger, with more and more musicians coming along each time to either just jam or find a new bunch of people to work with"

PIIP has entered into a sponsorship agreement with muso2muso to help it operate Jam'n'Link on a regular basis across Sydney.

Says Claude, "I want to help Rich ensure the ongoing success of both muso2muso and Jam'n'Link nights. Rich is doing something very special, he has a great vision. It's also a way for PIIP to get a greater insight into the music industry and ensure it can offer the perfect array of services. However, beyond the practical benefit to PIIP, Rich is a good bloke with a great idea that needs support. He's done this himself without any help. You have to stand up and pay a bloke like that his dues. I feel privileged that Rich has accepted my support and is willing to let PIIP contribute to the success of muso2muso and Jam'n'Link".

Rich and Claude are currently working on a collaborative project to be launched soon.

PIIP announces INCUBATOR

The Incubator Council (PIIP) is pleased to announce INCUBATOR®, a business expo for the creative industries scheduled to launch mid-2010.

INCUBATOR is a custom-made trade show for the creative industries. It is a creative marketplace that showcases the "who's doing what in the creative industries" and brings together music, film, theatre, advertising, media, brand, marketing and creative services. No matter your industry, if you're looking to promote your work, find finance, partners or clients, license copyright or find new creative talent, INCUBATOR is made for you.

The first INCUBATOR will be the sum of two specialist events called MUSIC INCUBATOR and FILM INCUBATOR. Each of these will work to stimulate creative commerce within the music and film industries respectively as well as synchronise opportunities between them. This will foster consensus and partnership to help nurture sustainable creative commerce.

Behind every creative business is a great mind. INCUBATOR will help great minds click.

INCUBATOR will create clusters of partnership by promoting industry engagement. It will do this by opening up new channels of communication between neighbouring sectors in the creative industries. It will also play the role of facilitator and bring together creative businesses, non-creative businesses, employers, employees, agents, producers, artists and capital sources around innovative new venture proposals. "Collaboration is natural. INCUBATOR will make it inevitable", says Claude Drulik, founder of PIIP.

INCUBATOR will also work to address the complex, challenging and progressive issues facing the Australian creative industries.

"Industry silos are a burden. They are an unnecessary transaction cost from the past," says Claude. "Today it's about tapping into overlapping, intersecting opportunities. There's a growing trend towards interdependence as creative businesses seek more commercial security. INCUBATOR will therefore help creative businesses cooperate and strengthen existing cohesions so they can capture new markets and greater market share."

"Industry interest in INCUBATOR has been phenomenal. It's clear that for many businesses this is going to be a smart way to not only remain viable, but grow new and sustainable income streams. This country is brimming with nimble characters, all they need is a little help to become audacious entrepreneurs," says Claude.

INCUBATOR will be a positive move in the right direction that will help drive the economic growth of the creative industries, improve investment return on creative spend and foster open innovation amongst businesses.

"No one else is doing this. I just cannot understand why", says Claude, "Too many in the creative industries are forced to pave their own way with no help whatsoever. Is that fair? At a time when we're talking about rolling out a National Broadband Network we need to also start planning how we can better support creative businesses to fill the future vacuum of content demand. We're moving into something new, we have been for a little while now, and this time right now is the bridge between the old way and the next way. This bridging time is a renaissance time. If you think about the jobs of tomorrow and where they will come from it becomes painfully obvious that the potential multiplier effect from creative commerce is too large to ignore. The issue is simple, do we want those jobs or do we want to hand them on a silver platter to other countries? We need to look at this issue seriously. Australia can yet make a historic move and continue to be 'the clever country'. We just need to push up to the brink of our limits are little harder if we are to craft our future success."

Over the years we have invested heavily in science to stimulate innovation and engineer new combinations of labour and capital. This has delivered phenomenal benefits to our society. It is now time to invest in the creative industries and stimulate a different type of innovation, one that helps us harvest people's creativity.

Compared to foreign markets, Australia does a very poor job in commercialising creative properties. Support exists but it is haphazard, uncoordinated and insufficient. This is nobody's fault, everyone is trying to grapple with a complex set of new opportunities. However, if we want to grow the supply of Australian creative properties into local and global markets over the next 10-15 years then major changes need to occur. One such necessary change is the need to reduce the transaction cost of putting creative ventures together. At the moment only a small number of people in Australia can put complex creative properties together. Why? More people should be encouraged, and supported, to produce creative properties. They should be given an opportunity to find and work with each other to help diversify venture risk, access alternate funding and tap into new skills. Democratising innovation and entrepreneurship can only be a good thing.

Make no mistake, an efficient creative industry is a stable and significant employer, a strong tax revenue generator and major wealth creation vehicle. The better it works the better off everyone is. This is one of the few sectors where a small operational improvement will deliver big returns and yield a significant multiplier effect across a lot of industries.
